Health & Safety
The Health & Safety Executive and the National Association of Scaffolding Contractors have issued a guidance (SG4:05) on the use of fall arrest equipment while erecting, dismantling and adapting scaffolding to improve safety standards in the scaffolding industry.
XL Scaffolding Ltd's erectors work to NASC guidance SG4:05 and are CITB trained and CISRS health & safety compliant.
All scaffolding projects are carried out after a detailed site specific risk assessment and method statement.
All health & safety requirements are achieved through risk management, selection of a skilled and experienced workforce and an ongoing training program.
NASC GUIDANCE NOTE SG4:05
Falls account for almost exactly half of all construction related deaths and serious injuries. The scaffolding industry has a clear role to play in helping tackle this problem. Most accidents involving falls could have been prevented if the right equipment had been provided and properly used.
The guidance represents a major step forward by explaining what steps the industry consider need to be taken to prevent falls by scaffolders. More importantly, the guidance is practical and when properly implemented will significantly reduce the risk of falls. HSE welcomes the strong lead given by the NASC that safety harnesses are issued to all scaffolders, and should be properly used at all times when working at height.
However, there is still scope for the guidance to evolve as fall prevention technology develops further. HSE will continue working together with the NASC on this and related issues.
The challenge now is for the NASC members and others to put this guidance into practice in the workplace. I hope that the majority of the scaffolding community will demonstrate their professionalism by rising to the challenge. Safe working can bring many benefits to individuals, companies and society.
I thank those responsible for producing this guidance and commend it to all those involved in scaffolding activities. It represents a real effort by the scaffolding industry to raise health and safety standards.
